Jenniffer Gonzalez highlights National Effort For The Preservation of Hacienda in Lares

Statement

San Juan, Puerto Rico- The resident commissioner, Jenniffer González Colón, announced that La Hacienda Los Torres has been included within the 11 Historic Places of the Nation in Greatest Danger, which represents a national effort to conserve the structure located in Lares.

Hacienda Los Torres was built in 1846, is within the National Register of Historic Places, has been declared a historic monument by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, the Planning Board and the Office of Historic Preservation of Puerto Rico, and as described by the Trust , helps tell the story of economic development, class conflict and political struggle on the island. The structure evokes the coffee plantations of the 19th century.

During the Grito de Lares, the hacienda, property of Don José María Torres, served as a refuge for the revolutionaries who rose up against the Spanish government on the island.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation, who prepare the list, works together with the organization For Nature to preserve this historic building. The commissioner mentioned that for years, several organizations as well as the Municipality of Lares have worked and joined efforts for the preservation of the structure.

Since 1988, the Trust has sought to raise awareness about the future of historic places in danger by creating its annual list of the 11 Historic Places of America in Greatest Danger. To date, 300 historical places in danger have been identified throughout the Nation, successfully achieving their preservation in the vast majority of these.

In 2013, the Trust included for the first time in its list a place in Puerto Rico, the San José Church located in Old San Juan; and in 2018, in general, they included the historical sources affected by the 2017 hurricanes both in Puerto Rico and in the Virgin Islands.
